Matei-Alexandru Mocanu is a Romanian director and screenwriter, originally trained in anthropology and visual communication, who ultimately found his calling in film. Despite early controversy, he built a strong portfolio of award-winning shorts and documentaries.
His breakthrough came with The Shukar Collective Project (2010), one of the very first HBO Romania productions and the first to achieve major critical and popular success. Blending music documentary with social commentary, the film earned a nomination at the Gopo Awards and screened internationally on HBO and ARTE, placing Mocanu among Romania’s most promising young directors.
More recently, he directed Buchetul Miresei (The Wedding Bouquet, 2019) and the upcoming short fiction film Filajul (The Stake-out, 2025), continuing his exploration of hybrid forms, experimental drama, and the boundaries between fiction and reality.
